Construction of Marine Culture Collection

We maintain a culture collection comprising hundreds of species of microalgae and photosynthetic bacteria isolated from marine environments (Fig. 1). These strains produce a variety of valuable compounds, including bioactive and antioxidant carotenoids, antimicrobial substances, omega-3 fatty acids, biofuels, and cosmetic ingredients (Table 1).

We are actively developing technologies to establish high cell density cultivation system and maximize the productivities of useful compounds using these microorganisms (Fig. 2). In parallel, we are expanding our marine culture collection through fieldwork in marine environments to discover novel and promising microorganisms.
