FOLENS Seminar January 2011: Follow-up for Charcoal and Satoyama Workshop in December and Preparation for Waste Management Field Trip in February

On 26 January, we held a FOLENS seminar, participate by ten students and five faculty staff.
The first half of the seminar was a review session on “Charcoal and Satoyama for Sustainable Agriculture and Environment” we organized in the Field Museum (FM) Tsukui in December. This was followed by a preview session for the field trip in February “Solid Waste Management: Visit to Waste Treatment Complex & Environmental Data Analysis Facility”. The sessions were organized by Assist. Prof. Ozaki and Associate Prof. Taniguchi respectively and an overall coordinator was Assist. Prof. Ninomiya-Lim.
In the first session, we contrasted population and economy aspects in Japan, Asia and Africa, as a significant background for the sustainability of agriculture and environment. Then, we had a discussion on the topics: “Is charcoal really sustainable, or not?” and “What do we need to do to sustain ‘Satoyama’?”, based on our impressions of the FM Tsukui visit.
In the latter session, we confirmed that the solid waste problems are also strongly associated with population and economy issues and problems occur in different stages of the waste management process such as collection and storage, treatment and disposal, and so on.  Dr. Taniguchi instructed about the next field trip plan that focuses on the appropriate treatment and safety management.

The seminar was held in Koganei Campus for the first time. Some of the students came from Fuchu Campus and Ibaraki University (United Graduate School) although it was a windy cold day. (HO)
