Significance of ‘networking’ was highlighted in a series of reporting presentations   Students who participated in overseas field training and their local counterpart faculties reported outlines of the training and answered questions from the audience.   FOLENS director, Professor Takada, handed the organizer of the new E&R Base in China, Professor Li, the FOLENS official panel.

Education Program for Field-Oriented Leaders in Environmental Sectors in Asia and Africa (FOLENS Program) hosted a second international symposium titled ‘Networking in FOLENS: Strategy and practice of field-oriented education for leaders in environmental sectors’ on Thursday 2nd of December, 2010 at the TUAT Koganei Campus in Tokyo. The symposium was planned on an awareness that networking (establishing relationships and works using the relationships) is a requirement to be a leader in environmental sectors and is also an essential component of education for developing leaders in environmental sectors. The symposium therefore aimed to be a place and opportunity for establishing networks for participants as well as for teaching to students the significance of networking.

The first part of the symposium was composed of presentations which reported progress of the FOLENS Program, and explained how FOLENS recognized meaning of ‘networking’ and what are strategy and practice of FOLENS’s networking. A presentation by a FOLENS student was also included to describe his experience in the FOLENS Program. The second part comprised presentations by organizers of the E&R Base universities of FOLENS, which outlined networking activities of the universities and roles of FOLENS in their networking. The third part was organized by reporting presentations of overseas field training by FOLENS students. Local counterpart faculties of the training made comments on activities and significance of the training.

Highlighting a concept ‘networking’ seemed to invite more attention and better understanding of a principle of education in the FOLENS Program, and to successfully enhanced fundamentals for future activities by sharing the principle. (tf)
