Report: The 1st International Symposium of Education Program for Field-Oriented Leaders in Environmental Sectors in Asia and Africa—The launch of FOLENS with international partners
The FOLENS program held its first international symposium, “The launch of FOLENS with international partners” on Friday, 5 March, 2010, at Meeting Room 2, Administration Main Building, TUAT Fuchu Campus. The main objectives were to share the information and understanding among FOLENS members and to sign the agreement between partner universities and TUAT to set up E&R Bases as a final preparation for the start of the educational program in April 2010.
Two faculty members from each partner university—Assoc. Prof. John Ofosu-Anim and Dr. Edward Benjamin Sabi from University of Ghana, Assoc. Prof. Mohamad Pauzi Zakaria and Dr. Ahmad Zaharin Aris from University Putra Malaysia, Assoc. Prof. Poonpipope Kasemsap and Dr. Tiwa Pakoktom from Kasetsart University in Thailand, Assoc. Prof. Le Viet Dung and Dr. Nguyen Van Be from Can Tho University in Thailand—were invited to attend the symposium. In total, fifty three participants including guests from related organizations, FOLENS members and students gathered.
With Assoc. Prof. Siaw Onwona-Agyeman of TUAT as master of ceremony, the symposium was opened with remarks by Prof. Hidefumi Kobatake, President of TUAT and Dr. Shig Okaya from Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Prof. Hideshige Takada, Director of FOLENS, presented the overview of the FOLENS program, before each partner university introduced its efforts for the better environment. After a brief tea break followed a panel discussion on “quality and ability required for leaders in environmental sectors in Asia and Africa and how to develop/educate such human resources”. Prof. Takahisa Kusano from JICA/ Joshi Eiyo University, Dr. Yasufumi Tsukamura from Bridge Asia Japan, joined the discussion, together with panelists from partner universities, Prof. Takada, Dr. Masaaki Yamada, Assoc. Prof. Takahisa Furuichi (FOLENS Chief Coordinator) of TUAT. Valuable comments and proposals were made, providing ideas to enrich the FOLENS program further. After the comment by Dr. Koujun Yamashita of Japan Science and Technology Agency, the signing ceremony was held.
On the following day, E&R Base faculties and related members of TUAT had a work meeting to share information and exchange opinions on the operation of FOLENS.
FOLENS Head Office is now preparing a more detailed report of the symposium. It will be introduced on this website as soon as it is ready.
