Human factor and tide level influences on water quality of urban river in CanTho, a main city of Mekong Delta

A trend of electron conductivity (EC) of water in Tham Tuong Canal and Hau River between May 2010 and Jan. 2012
・ Tham Tuong Canal showed much higher and fluctuating EC than Hau River.
・ Anthropogenic effect might largely affect water quality of Tham Tuong Canal.

Relationship between EC and BOD in Tham Tuong Canal
・ Positive correlations were shown both EC vs BOD and, EC vs COD, indicating that human activity is common factor both organic and inorganic contamination.
・Water quality was changed by time (morning < daytime)and season(rain season < dry season).
・Dilution and human activity might have complex effect.

Relationship between BOD and CODCr in Tham Tuong Canal
・BOD and CODCr correlated over the whole concentration (approx. 1:1.1). This may indicate that bio- degradable domestic sewage is dominant.
・Consistent influence of human effect was shown from the single relations throughout time and season.

Relationships between Na+ vs Cl- , and NH4+-N vs Cl- (mmol/L)
・Na+ and Cl- correlation (approx. 2:1) indicated that they are partially discharged as NaCl, which is one of the main emission forms from human.
・NH4+-N and Cl- showed different trend between morning and daytime.

  Tide level and ion concentrations
Inverse changes in water quality and tide level indicates dilution effect.

Tide level, water flow and Cl concentration

Effects of tide level and water flow on BOD and CODCr levels in Tham Tuong Canal water
・Flow direction affects water quality as well as tide level

Effect of Hau River water on water quality of Tham Tuong Canal
・Both Cl-vs Na, and Cl- vs NH4+-N correlated throughout the 4 waters. Also EC vs BOD, EC vs COD.
・Water quality of Tham Tuong Canal is dominated by anthropogenic effect and water exchange with Hau River.

Major factors on water quality of Tham Tuong Canal:
・Water quality of Tham Tuong Canal is dominated by anthropogenic effect.
・Dilution and water flow direction changes water quality.
・Water quality of Tham Tuong Canal is strongly related to exchange of water with Hau River.
・The current result does not demonstrate that time trend of human activity affect water quality. It might be studied in the further monitoring and investigation.
