Professor Emeritus Dr. Akira Endo Receives Prince Mahidol Award 2014 in the Field of Medicine
On 6th November 2014, Professor Emeritus Dr. Akira Endo was awarded the Prince Mahidol Award 2014 in the field of Medicine for the discovery of the first anticholesterol statin, called compactin, in 1976.

The award is named after His Royal Highness Prince Mahidol of Songkla, father of the present Thai King who went to Harvard University and MIT in the beginning of the 20th century to pursue his studies in the field of medicine and public health respectively.
After his return, he contributed greatly for the advancements of both fields in Thai, coming to being known by Thais as "The Father of Modern Medicine and Public Health of Thailand".
The Prince Mahidol Award Foundation was created in January 1, 1992, in commemmoration of the centenary of the birthday of the Prince, and awards "individuals or institutions that have made outstanding and exemplary contributions to the advancement of medical, and public health and human services in the world".
