I am a foreign student. What are the requirements to pursue my undergraduate studies at TUAT?

Foreign applicants can apply through the "Special Admissions for Privately Financed Foreign Students". A high level of Japanese is required as most of the classes are offered in Japanese.
Applicants must fulfill ALL 4 of the requirements below to be eligible:
(1)Must not possess Japanese nationality
(2)Must fit in at least one of the following conditions:
a. Concluded or are expected to conclude their 12-year basic education at their home country by March of the academic year they are applying for. Prospective graduates should hold a certificate of expected graduation which should be recognized by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
b. Possess an International Baccalaureat (IB) degree
c. Possess a Abitur degree
d. Possess a French Baccalaureate degree
※(2) b, c and d applicants must be 18 years by March 31st of the year they plan to start their studies.
(3)Must take the "Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU)" as follows:
a. Faculty of Agriculture applicants: Test must be taken in Japanese language
b. Faculty of Engineering applicants: Test can be taken in either Japanese or English languages.
c. Japanese Language and Mathematics (Course II) are mandatory.
d. For Science, the designated subjects vary (two subjects between Physics, Chemistry and Biology) according to the department applied for.
(4)Must take TOEFL or TOEIC exams as follows:
a. Faculty of Agriculture applicants: Score higher than 470 in TOEFL PBT, 52 inTOEFL iBT or 500 in TOEIC
b. Faculty of Engineering applicants: No requirements of a minimum score, but must possess either TOEFL (PBT or IBT) or TOEIC certificates.

Acceptance to TUAT under this system depends on the sum of the following scores, totalling 1,000 points:
a. EJU exams (200 points for Japanese, 200 points for Mathematics, 200 points for Science);
b. TUAT's Japanese Language Test (200 points);
c. TUAT's interview results (200 points)

Entrance examination and application forms vary among faculties and graduate schools. Please check faculties/graduate school of your choice, and contact its administrative office for the information.

I cannot enter Japan due to border restrictions. Can I start my course remotely?

Ask your supervisor. Whether the remote course is applicable depends on the program you are attending.

What is the language of instruction?

Undergraduate courses are basically offered in Japanese (with exception of short term exchange programs STEP Programs).
Courses offered in English can be confirmed through SPICA's Syllabus System.

Is it possible to do a short-term program from my own country?

How much is the cost of living?

According to TUAT student survey 2019, the average monthly expense for international students was JPY 80,000 to 160,000. This monthly expense includes housing, food, electricity/heating, research/books, transportation expenses.

Is Halal food available in the university cafeteria?

Food with Halal certification is not served in the cafeteria. You can choose vegetables and fish.

How important is Japanese fluency?

For undergraduates, Japanese fluency is required and JPT N1 level is recommended. For graduates, it is recommended to understand fundamental Japanese for daily life.

To open a bank account, you have to show your passport and residence card.  To apply for a credit card they will ask you to show additional certificates.
