Invitation of applications for a Tenure Senior Assistant Professor (PDF)
Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT) invites applications for one tenure position
at the rank of Senior Assistant Professor in Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering.
TUAT is interested in candidates who are committed to the highest standard of scholarship and professional activities.
This invitation is part of our “Career Design Program for Female Faculty Members,”
based on our policy of systematically increasing the number of female faculty members,
which is one of our diversity and inclusion efforts conducted under the leadership of the university president.
We are currently considering only female applicants for this position.
1. Background Information
The appointee under the “Career Design Program for Female Faculty Member”
will be provided with opportunities to lead an independent laboratory, laboratory start-up budget, annual research funding,
support for building her research environment, and mentoring.
She may also take advantage of the variety of campus support programs provided by the TUAT Women’s Future Development Organization to receive life event support.
She will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in her area of expertise.
She may also be eligible for promotion to associate professor in the fifth year of employment based on research and teaching achievement.
(She may postpone her promotion review if she has suspended her career due to a life event.)
2. Area of Research
Applications from the frontier of mechanical engineering and related fields are welcome.
The appointee is expected to be a leading researcher in the field in ten years,
who can conduct original research with an awareness of social implementation in near future, and who has a wide range of interests from fundamentals to applications.
3. Qualifications
As of April 1, 2023, the applicant must be a female researcher with a doctoral degree which was received within the past 10 years.
She is expected to have research experiences as a postdoctoral fellow, research associate or researcher in academia or industry for approximately three or more years.
TUAT is interested in candidates who are committed to the highest standard of scholarship and professional activities.
Japanese language proficiency is welcomed though not required.
4. Salary
Annual Salary: Basic monthly salary is JPY 335,900. Bonus is additionally paid.
Total annual salary is approximately JPY 5,800,000 (In the case that the candidate received Ph.D. in past four years.
The salary depends on education background and teaching experience). The salary is calculated following TUAT’s employment rules.
Note: Taxes and insurances will be withheld from the monthly salary.
Working Hours: According to the Discretionary Labor System (7 hours and 45 minutes/day)
Holidays: Saturday, Sunday, National Holidays, New Year Holidays (from December 29th to January 3rd), the University Foundation Day (May 31st)
Leave of Absence: Annual leave (stipulated in the employment rules), Special leave, and Sick leave.
Allowances: Commuting allowance, Housing allowance, Family-Support allowance (under the fulfilment of the payment conditions)
Insurance: Employees' Health Insurance, Employees' Welfare Pension, Workers' Accident Insurance and Employment Insurance
5. Startup and research budgets
Annual research budget is equal to that of other faculty members. In addition to that, a start-up budget will be provided to each appointee until the third year of employment.
6. Life event support
The Women’s Future Development Organization provides access to a range of campus support programs
(http://web.tuat.ac.jp/~dan-jo/josei/support.html (in Japanese)) while on leave, etc. due to a life event.
Once hired, female faculty members may also receive advice and support from the Women’s Future Development Organization.
7. Promotion to Tenure Associate Professor
A review will be conducted on the fifth year after being hired, and the appointee may be promoted to tenure associate professor
if her work satisfies the standards of her department.
If she is not promoted, she will need to be reviewed again on her sixth or seventh year
(she may postpone her initial promotion review or re-review if she has taken leave due to a life event).
The Review Committee in the applicable department will notify her of which standards must be met for promotion, within six months of her hire date.
If she is not passed the screening during her review or re-review, she will remain in the position as when she was first hired.
8. Contribution to Education
The appointee will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in their areas of expertise.

14. Period for Application and Selection Steps

After reviewing the application materials, selected candidates will be invited for an interview and to make a short presentation, which will be held in August or later.
