11 June 2012: Post-field Reporting Seminar and Case Study Workshop

In this Post-field Reporting Seminar, two students who have participated in Overseas Field Training in September and October 2011 and one student who has conducted his Internship from February to May 2012 reported their activities and achievements. Nineteen students and nine faculty members attended.

Although the number of presenters was smaller than usual, the variety was wide – a report of runoff monitoring in his home country by a Vietnamese student; a report of FOLENS Office-organized Ghana Field Training by a Chinese student; and a report of internship at a TUAT-JICA project site in Bach Ma National Park, Vietnam, by a Japanese student. While FOLENS students have a variety of backgrounds and specialties, themes and contents of their overseas field training and internship are also diverse. Therefore, to provide a common basis for a discussion among these diverse students, each presenter showed a flowchart to describe related environmental issues and their causes and effects at the end of their presentation.

In the following Case Study Workshop, participants were divided into small groups and created a “map” of various environmental issues showing their causes, effects, and relationships between each others. Due to time constraints, we could not fully discuss “stakeholders” and “necessary actions for a stakeholder” as planned but some of the groups did mention these in their presentation.

There were a few important points to note reflecting on the presentations. First, we should avoid having a long time-lag between the training and the presentation as it can make the presentation focus vague. Second, it is important for a presenter to give enough explanation and interesting presentation for audience from different specialties. Based on this reflection, FOLENS plans to further improve its Post-field Reporting Seminar and Case Study Workshop in future. (SN)
