-Experience from the FOLENS program-
The 4th FOLENS international symposium was held at Fuchu campus on November 29, 2012. The objective of the symposium was to explore the way to develop field oriented mind and skill sets at university education by clarifying the requirement and expectation towards global environmental human resource who can actually contribute to the field.
At the symposium, the experiences of the FOLENS program were reported by the FOLENS students and overseas education and research base faculties. Following that, guest speakers shared the required field oriented mind and skill sets at respective fields.
The following panel discussion found several key issues. Firstly, the common view was shared that it is important to nurture social skills, communication skills, abilities to take action, and flexible mind and attitude by going out to the field, beyond lectures at the university. Then, it is confirmed that such field oriented mind and skill sets is important as a qualification of real field oriented environmental leader. Also, the messages to the students were highlighted as learning from failures, take any chances without giving up and put importance on networking.
