Invitation of applications for Tenure-track Associate Professors (PDF)

Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT) invites applications for one tenure-track position at the rank of Associate Professor in Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering. TUAT is interested in candidates who are committed to the highest standard of scholarship and professional activities. The appointee will be provided with independent laboratory, startup budget and research fund with reduced duties of administration and lecture. He/she will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in his/her area of expertise. There will be two evaluations at the 3rd and 5th years after the appointment. If the outcome of the evaluation indicates that the appointee has made promising or significant research, he or she will be promoted to the status of tenure position. Annual salary is the same as tenured faculty members as shown below. 1. Background Information
TUAT has been promoting the system of tenure-track and encouraging young researchers to establish themselves as promising researchers. The tenure-track faculty members are provided with the freedom of their researches. They also receive prioritized support in facility and budget according to our promotion rule and system. They are allowed to concentrate on their own researches for a certain period with less administration duties. It is needless to say that they can collaborate with established professors when they need. We continually examine and review the tenure-track system so that they can produce distinguished research results and be promoted to tenure positions with high rates not just in TUAT but also in other universities since mobility among universities are very important. TUAT prepares for an enough number of posts for them.

2. Area of Research
The area of expertise of applicants include but are not limited to:
Next-Generation Machine tool, Advanced Machining Technology, Micro/Nano Fabrication, Precision Measurement, Additive Manufacturing, Digital Twin, Software for Production, Smart Factory and other related fields.

3. Qualifications
The applicant must have a doctoral degree which was received within the past 6 years at the time of application deadline. He/she is expected to have research experiences as a postdoctoral fellow, research associate or researcher in academia or industry for several years. TUAT is interested in candidates who are committed to the highest standard of scholarship and professional activities. The appointee is expected to make basic, advanced and innovative research in the field described in 2. during the employment period of the tenure-track position. Japanese language proficiency is welcomed though not required.

4. Salary
Monthly Salary: Basically JPY 369,500 (In the case that the candidate received Ph.D. in past four years. The salary depends on education background and teaching experience). The monthly salary is calculated following TUAT's employment rules. Bonus is additionally paid.
Note: Taxes and insurances will be withheld from the monthly salary.
Working Hours: According to the Discretionary Labor System (7 hours and 45 minutes/day)
Holidays: Saturday, Sunday, National Holidays, New Year@Holidays (from December 29th to January 3rd), the University Foundation Day (May 31st)
Leave of Absence: Annual leave (stipulated in the employment rules), Special leave, and Sick leave.
Allowances: Commuting allowance, Housing allowance, Family-Support allowance (under the fulfilment of the payment conditions)
Insurance: Employees' Health Insurance, Employees' Welfare Pension, Workers' Accident Insurance and Employment Insurance

5. Startup and research budgets
Each appointee will be provided for the first and the second year as a startup fund. For the remaining years, annual research budget is equal to that of the tenured faculty members.

6. Promotion to Tenure Position
Intermediate evaluation will be made in the 3rd year and one who will make promising research will be scheduled to shift to the status of tenure position. In the 5th year, final evaluation will be made and one who will make significant research will be promoted to tenure position. TUAT prepares for a tenure post to each tenure-track position so that the appointee will have the opportunity to be promoted to tenure position if he/she passes the screening.

7. Contribution to Education
The appointee will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in their areas of expertise.

9. Duration of Appointment
The contract is for 5 years. After this period, the appointee who will make significant research will be promoted to the status of tenure position.

All the private information is closed following the related laws and rules, but may be used to obtain references while protecting privacy. In addition, proof of doctoral degree and health certificate will be requested to submit after the selection.

13. Period for Application and Selection Steps
Applications must be sent to the e-mail address below by 5 p.m. on May 10th, 2024 in Japan Standard Time (must be received).
After reviewing the application materials, selected candidates will be invited for an interview and to make a short presentation, which will be held in the end of May or later. Applicants should be responsible for all travel expenses incurred for the interview.

14. Security Check under the Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Act
Based on the Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Act, TUAT conducts security checks when hiring new staff. We, therefore, ask you to provide information necessary for the security check. As a result of reviewing the information, if the applicant falls under any regulatory requirements, we may ask you to change the scope of your desired education and research. Additionally, if the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry disapproves TUATfs request to approve your acceptance, our offer to you may be cancelled.
