Automatic estimation of anatomical landmarks and the 3D spine curve from a Kinect sensor
I do research about automatic estimation of anatomical landmarks and the 3D spine curve from a Kinect sensor, and the development of the program, which can detect the scoliosis automatically. The scoliosis is a disease where the spine in the coronal plane curves from the centerline to the side. It may cause serious disorders such as decrease of vital capacity. However, since the cause has not been identified, it is needed to have regular follow-up for prevention. So I have adopted the Kinect as a system for observation of the scoliosis. Kinect is equipped with a high-precision infrared depth sensor, which is not difficult to handle compared to X-ray. Nevertheless, Kinect has also excellent portability and low cost. This may lead the reduction of health care burden. Currently, I try to improve and optimize the robustness of the automatic estimation techniques of anatomical landmarks by using deep learning, which is convolutional neural network. This system is expected to estimate anatomic landmarks more accurately and improve the reliability of the diagnosis of scoliosis.
