Research concepts

Through trace analyses of organic compounds in environmental samples, we tackle various environmental problems. We hope that the products of our studies directly or indirectly contribute the solutions of the problems

1. Molecular marker approach
2. Understanding of transport processes of organic pollutants
3. Revealing the distributions, sources, behaviors and fates of organic pollutants.

Research Styles

1. Intensive field observations
2. Sensitive instrumental analysis

Research topics in 2008

1. Development, evaluation and field application of Molecular Markers
  • Distinguishment of source of PAHs derived from fossil-fuel combustion and biomass burning by using molecular markers and compound-specific-measurement of radio-carbon.
  • Establishment of molecular markers to distinguish domestic waste and livestock wastes in tropical Asian waters.

    2. Development of analytical methods of new environmental contaminants and their application.
  • Development of analytical method for tetracycline antibiotics in sewage effluents, livestock wastes, and river water.
  • Development of analytical method for phenolic pharmaceuticals in sediments.

    3. Understanding the distribution and behavior of organic contaminants in aquatic environments.
  • Distribution of pharmaceuticals in tropical Asian waters.
  • Distribution of perfluorinated surfactants (PFSs) in Asian freshwater fishes.

    4. Estimation of sources of organic micro-pollutants
  • Source-identification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in atmospheric and aquatic environments in India.

    5. Study on transport processes of organic pollutants
  • Transport mechanism of antibiotics in coastal waters.
  • Behavior of pharmaceutical chemicals derived from combined sewer overflow (CSO) in coastal waters.
  • Behavior of livestock-derived antibiotics in tropical Asian waters.
  • Distribution and behaviors of pharmaceuticals, antibiotics, and perfluorinated surfactants in groundwater

    6. Uptake and accumulation of organic micro-pollutants to organisms.
  • Biomagnification of polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) in food-web in Tokyo Bay.
  • Bioaccumulation of polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) in freshwater fishes.
  • Transfer of plastic-derived organic micro-pollutants to marine biota.
  • Understanding the uptake pathway of organic micropollutants to seabirds by non-invasive approach using preen gland oil.
  • Understanding feeding behavior of seabird by non-invasive analysis of carbon and nitrogen stable isotope.

    7. Development of monitoring methods for organic micro-pollutants.
  • International Pellet Watch : Global Monitoring of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) using Beached Plastic Resin Pellets.
  • Global monitoring POPs in seabirds by non-invasive approach using preen gland oil.
  • Tropical Asian Core (TACO) project : Reconstruction of pollution history in tropical Asian waters using sediment core.
